BMI calculator
Adult BMI from height and weight, with a reference band and a weight span for BMI 18.5–24.9.
When you want BMI and a reference weight from height and weight.
BMI is kilograms divided by metres squared. Adult bands and the weight for BMI 18.5–24.9 are shown.
What this page does
It finds adult BMI from height and weight, an adult reference band, and the weight span that matches BMI 18.5–24.9 at that height. It does not judge children or teens, and it does not diagnose or decide treatment.
Formula
BMI is weight (kg) ÷ (height (m) × height (m)). Reference weight is the weight at BMI 18.5 and at BMI 24.9 for the same height.
Adult reference bands
Below 18.5 is underweight. 18.5 up to but not including 25 is the normal range. 25 up to but not including 30 is overweight. 30 or more is the obesity range.
Example
A height of 170 cm and a weight of 65 kg give a BMI of 22.49, in the normal range. The reference weight for BMI 18.5–24.9 at that height is 53.5–72.0 kg.
Note
BMI is a reference for adult body size. It does not by itself diagnose health. Muscle and similar factors can mean it does not match how a person is built. It is not for children or teens. Height, weight, and the result are not sent for measurement.
Questions
How is BMI calculated?
Divide weight in kilograms by height in metres squared. The figure is shown to two decimal places.
What is the reference weight?
For the height you enter, it shows the adult weights that match BMI 18.5 and BMI 24.9.
Can this diagnose a condition?
No. It is a reference for adult body size, not a diagnosis of health on its own, and not a chart for children or teens.
